After returning from my grandma's house on Sunday, I skipped off to Maia's (not really) and began burning discs and arranging customer profile sheets in an orderly, chronological fashion. There wasn't too much to do, so when Rumor called and asked if I could spend the night, I convinced Maia to let me off a half hour early. (Convincing being me saying, "Hey, can I leave a half hour early?" and her saying "Sure!" She might be a flake but I can't complain about her being too uptight.) The evening was spent watching Titanic and eating cookies, and the next day we walked to my house to watch Monk and eat tacos. Because summer is not meant to be productive in the least. Yesterday was just like any other day until about 3 p.m. The sky rapidly darkened and a ferocious storm blew up, effectively canceling the baseball game of my brother's that I might have been made to go to. Then it began to hail. Then the hail got bigger--not golf balls or anything, but easily the size of quarters. No damage, but we were right in the middle of making dinner when we lost all power except in the upstairs phone. Otherwise, nothing. No lights, no TV or internet, no stove or oven. The burgers would have to wait until either the power came back on or it was dry enough outside to grill. Well, the grill happened first. Then when it seemed like all would be mere boring-ness (we lost power at about 4:30 and got it back at almost 8) my dad taught my brothers and reminded me how to play five-card draw and we actually had a pretty good time. Today it's been slow but satisfying. I've been cleaning, listening to music, reading and watching brief snatches of Nickelodeon as I go downstairs. My frugal 12-year-old brother, affectionately known as the Money Nazi and who's a real coin freak, offered me three dollars cash for my barrel of pennies. He likes having as many coins as possible, and I like having cash to go see Up (which Rumor and I intend to do tomorrow), so the transaction was made. I promised him Canadian quarters if I could find them. I have to clean out that drawer anyway. Later. |
